The charm of antique diamonds is in their cut-by-hand, cut-by-candlelight individuality - color variations, irregular faceting, imperfections, and some wear are normal and to be celebrated. Given new life in our hand-crafted settings, these 100+yr old diamonds will continue to burn brightly for generations to come.
Old mine cut diamonds – cut from the early 18th century to the late 19th century, old mine cuts are slightly cushiony or squarish in shape, with a small table, high crown, and our favorite distinctive detail, an open culet which reads as a glitter speck in the center of the diamond.
Old European cut diamonds – a precursor to the modern brilliant cut, old European cut diamonds were popular from the late Victorian era through the Art Deco period of the early 1900s. Old Europeans are round, with a high crown, and less noticeable culet than the old mine cut.
To appeal to modern preferences, antique diamonds may be recut or repolished to make them more “perfect”. Nonsense! We see rough girdles, scratches, and irregularities as marks of history, a little passport stamp of authenticity and worldliness. No two antique diamonds will ever be a perfect match, and for those that value sentimentality and one-of-a-kind personality, we think you will fall in love.
